social mysteria

February 7, 2010

I wonder if we really understand the true meaning of social networking or if we are getting lost in the numbers.

Inspired by this Friday Vidcast from Aaron Irizarry. Special thanks to Andy Rutledge for his brutally honest opinions.

    Kyle,

In watching your video, it comes to mind that in the course of these meet-ups, you might need some kind of structure. I don’t mean a formal agenda, or formal structure though.

Perhaps an email sent out to folks before the meet-up to propose a question of two for them to think about might be an effective way to give each week a theme, or a central idea to “hang” your discussions on.

    Just a thought!

Thanks for the post. I think Andy makes a great point, and I agree with his perspective in many ways. I love that he feels that we should spend that time producing something of value.

From my experience, meetups tend to loose their luster over time in regards to the content discussed. In SLC I meet with the local SMC chapter each month. Each time I can’t help but feel like we discuss the same things over and over again, and I’ve found myself attending more for the personal interaction with colleagues than hearing the content.

That said, I don’t want to discount meetups as a waste of time. I’m the type of person that feeds off those around me. If someone is excited, I get excited. If someone is down, I try to sympathize. I personally enjoy meeting individuals in person, and draw a great amount of inspiration from real-life interaction. There is only so much you can absorb from a blog post, tweet or video. Somewhere between the interwebs emotions get lost… not all, but some. Do we need to meet every month? Probably not.
