Taming Your Tweets

July 13, 2009

I was reminded today of how much power our words hold. A simple personal opinion on twitter today really stirred the waters in the creative community. I think the whole thing got out of hand honestly.

Basically we need to put our pride aside and embrace the creative community as a whole. There are no “groups” or “cliques” here at Chat Creative. We are open to anyone interested in connecting with other creative people.

My stance from the beginning of Chat Creative is that this is nothing new. People have been sharing thoughts, ideas and information for hundreds of years. Only with the internet and the recent rise of social networking has our scope of who we can reach broadened. I don’t mind promoting others out there with similar ideas, and I hope they would be willing to promote us as well.

So let’s put ourselves aside for a second and look at the bigger picture of what we’re trying to accomplish. I’m positive that when we do this we will see how we can work together, instead of against.

Kyle, I agree with you 100%. Working together is so much more powerful than than working against eachother. We are only hurting ourselves if we work against one another, and in the end nothing gets accomplished.

Couldn’t have been worded any better. Help others as a creative whole. Cheers Kyle, great stuff!

Thanks for sharing. Being creative as a community will only help the community.

    Great post. Love the honesty.

  5. Definitely seems sincere, but for those of us who aren’t aware of what went down earlier today, it’s actually kind of confusing. Either way though, it does represent some core values that I think are always important, especially humility.

Thanks for you comment Oliver. Don’t worry if you missed what was going on though, that wasn’t really my main focus here. I just mentioned it to let you all know what it taught me after the fact.

      • For sure. If it was something negative, I probably don’t want to hear about it. Hopefully some positive posts coming up so people like me don’t have to ask what they missed :)

  6. I agree with you 100% thanks for saying it out loud ;)

Very good points. That’s a good message to put out there.

  8. Well said. I think a quote from the movie ‘Mean Girls’ is in order:

Calling somebody else fat won’t make you any skinnier. Calling someone stupid doesn’t make you any smarter. And ruining Regina George’s life definitely didn’t make me any happier. All you can do in life is try to solve the problem in front of you.

I don’t know how this is relevant at all to what you said, but I’m hoping you’ll find some sort of inner truth in this. It’s deep.

Chris, That is freaking hilarious. And what’s even worse is I remember that part of the movie. But I think that quote sums up what I was trying to say better than I ever could. I honestly don’t know why I’m still continuing in my efforts here. I think I’ll resign to my meditation room to think on such deep things. Thank you.

  9. Louis says:

I pretty much skipped over the whole confrontation, and im quit glad i did because anything to be arguing over in a design community is immature and uncalled for.

I belive you worded this the best way it could be worded.

  10. Definitely! I missed the “incident”, but really… What’s there to be negative about anyway? The design community is in a great place with outlets like blogs and other social media here to help build an engaging, educational community. We’re all here to learn and teach. There is always someone who knows more than you, and there will always be someone you are more knowledgeable than.

I totally agree. Great post! Social media can misconstrue ideas and thoughts. It is the love/hate relationship of the internet. Let’s all unite! Thanks and sincerely, Jeremy Darko

wow i really need to pay attention and keep up with your posts too.

well…even though I missed whatever happen. I’m glad you took the time to say what you said and I hope it made you feel better about the situation (cause it should).

You’re working really hard on chatcreative and getting out there and it’s only benefiting the design community. Continue spreading the message about working together cause it’s something we all should do.

Here is another quote for you, but it’s not as good as chris’ :)

You have no control over what the other guy does. You only have control over what you do. -A. J. Kitt

I think it’s a good representation of what you’re doing with this post and the decision to remove some tweets.

  13. Brian Yerkes says:

Kyle, nice video and I agree with your message.

I’ve been thinking for some time now, since designers started to blow up in the blogging world, that a lot are in danger of taking themselves, their work and their online identities too seriously. Being active in the online design community is simply all about sharing information, learning from each other and having fun while doing it.

In another post I just read on your site dealt with the “rockstars” and the “Best designers to follow on Twitter” etc….some of these things are all helping to create this self-involved and self-important mentality that is growing around us. Obviously everyone wants to brand and promote themselves, but many seem to be taking this too far, and are trying to take it a negative level.

What yourself, Aaron and a few others are doing with video c hat sessions and things is a refreshing change. It’s real, and it’s community. Just what we need right now.
